Spotify Growth Strategy: Over 90,557 Streams For Brand New Artist

FIRST THINGS FIRST (What You Will NOT Get In This Article)

  1. Personally, I can’t stand when I read or watch something from a marketer and don’t get value out of it. Therefore… EVERY WORD in this article will have a purpose, so read thoroughly.
  2. We’ve promoted music for over 20,000 artists in just about every genre you can think of, so the advice we give is from the standpoint of $1,000,000s spent in music ads + countless hours of SEO and strategic planning.
  3. If you make it to the end of this article, we’ll give you some other case studies for free with a bunch of other music marketing strategies we didn’t list here.

CASE STUDY: Garreth Trent - Do You Still Love Me

Genre: Singer-Songwriter

When Garreth released this record it was getting about 5 plays per day. Like many other artists, he tried posting about his song on social media, but it wasn’t gaining much traction.

Trying to get fortunate with the IG or Tik Tok algorithm is NOT going to be a long term strategy for music growth.

Sure, you put your stuff out there, optimize it, and put a strategy together to try and get free traffic, but you NEED to know how to properly take advantage of paid traffic too.

With Garreth, we did BOTH free and paid traffic.

  • Song grew from 5 plays/day to over 905 plays/day on a brand new artist.

  • Over 695 playlist placements (most of which are user owed lists instead of professional playlisters).

  • Over 90,000 streams (and counting) with 25% now coming from user libraries.

  1. Movie Soundtracks: Anyone that tells you movie soundtracks are bad for promo has NO clue what they’re talking about. We have access to data on HUNDREDS of songs within Spotify For Artists and YouTube analytics. Movie soundtracks perform exceedingly well at getting traffic when done right. The main key is that the song must fit well with the overall feel of the soundtrack and to target movies or shows that are releasing soon. When this happens, these soundtracks have the potential to outperform even our best paid ads.
  2. Targeting Smaller Lists: Instead of going for huge playlists, we focused on getting placements for MANY smaller lists. Ideally, with this strategy you have to own some smaller lists yourself, then trade promo with other artists or smaller labels who also own some lists.

  1. If you’re going to pay for ads, NEVER send the traffic to just one song. We run ads for hundreds of artists through our IG & Tik Tok promotions, and we always advise them to send the traffic to either a playlist they own, or a link that has their other socials, email list, or website on it.
  2. DO NOT send the traffic to a Best Hits (This Is: Artist Name Here) Playlist: Unless you already have a solid brand name (over 10,000 followers on Spotify), it is best to title your playlist with a genre, mood, or trend. You’ll see a better cost per ad whenever you do this.

  • Free traffic is great, and you should always be trying to get it, but there must be a paid strategy alongside it. The paid traffic gives us a sustainable business whenever the free traffic dries up.
  • Look for places where there is traffic but not much competition. This can be through SEO, a new social media platform, or even a niche genre.
  • It really isn’t worth it to pay for ads yourself if you have no idea what you’re doing. If you’re going to spend the money, make sure you’re spending it smartly. Grab one of our free courses that is included with your music promo purchase at

With an already buzzing YouTube audience of over 400K+ subscribers, Kid Travis wanted his Instagram profile to start gaining some of that same traction.

While you can get some spill over audience from YouTube, Kid Travis knew that Instagram ad campaigns could boost his presence on IG even further!

He discovered that trying to run Instagram ads yourself vs. having us add our years of experience and expertise to them made a huge difference!

His main goal was to achieve new followers who are seriously interested in his journey as an artist.

Kid Travis already had amazing talent but needed to combine his music genius with some marketing expertise to get the best of both worlds.

We were able to bring out the heart of his music through paid ads by editing & optimizing his existing videos and properly researching and structuring his ad campaigns.

The end results: We were able to consistently and predictably gain followers averaging between $0.25-$0.35 per follower (including a bulk of the promotion being done in high cost English speaking countries such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia, & Canada) resulting in around 4,000 new, engaged followers/month on Instagram.
