Artists ask us a lot of questions.
“How do I get more fans on Instagram?”
“How do I get 1,000,000 streams on Spotify?”
“How do I go viral on TikTok?”
These aren’t bad questions, but they’re not long term success questions.
In order to have long term financial success as a musician you need to start asking the right questions.
Successful people in any field usually start with the end in mind. For most artists, this means you’re not just thinking about how to get fans. You’re thinking about how you can get paid from those fans so that you can have freedom and time to create, perform, and run your music career in a sustainable way.
It does you no good to have 50,000 fans on Instagram and no idea the best way to monetize your fanbase.
If you’ve been following us for any amount of time we probably sound like a broken record beating this drum, but it’s because most artists still don’t understand this concept.
If you don’t have products & services that YOU control the price of to sell to your audience, you’re setting yourself up for a hard ride in the music business.
The easiest place to implement these products and services is YOUR website.
Streaming revenue alone will NOT be enough to sustain growth in your music career.
Let’s take an example.
If you sell 200 t-shirts at $20 per shirt you would make $4,000.
If you got 1,000,000 streams on Spotify, then you’d earn about $4,000.
Here’s a question you need to decide: “Is it harder to get 200 people to buy my merch, or to get 1,000,000 to listen to a song.”
We're not saying that you don't ever try and 1,000,000 streams. We're saying you need to have a diversified strategy to earning money in this new music industry.
Today we’re highlighting ATLYS Music. They’re an incredible, multi-genre quartet that went all-in on their music career and got our professional website design services.
Even though ATLYS has millions of streams on Spotify, they understood in order to run your music career as a viable business YOU need to take more control in your own hands.
They now have music, sound packs, & virtual string session work available on their website that can help them scale their music business.
We talked about just how important your website is, but I don’t want to leave artists with the impression that any old website will do.
A nice looking website does NOT mean that it’s optimized.
An optimized website will have products and services, SEO, pixel installation, sales copywriting, email service provider integration (with email copywriting), marketing based headlines, and the list goes on and on.
I don’t want to overwhelm you, but a great website takes work and intentionality.
EVERY. ARTIST. Reading this needs an optimized, marketing-based website.
If you want to ignore our plan and keep trying your own, you’re welcome to do that.
But here’s our credentials in the music business:
$3,000,000+ in revenue
Promoted for over 12,000 artists
Run over 20,000 music marketing campaigns
Spent over $1,000,000 advertising in the music business
Taken $0 in venture capital (self-funded)
If you’ve got better credentials than that, by all means don’t take our advice.
If you don’t, you might as well give our plan a shot.
