Chasing a career in the music business isn't simple, nor is it for the weak at heart. In fact, with all the challenges one has to face to make it, it can actually be quite depressing. Here are 11 quick, easy tips that can help keep your spirits high and your focus bright!

1. FEED YOUR BRAIN, IT'S HUNGRY

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. You need to learn new marketing information daily. I hope everyone is hip to the fact that talent isn't enough anymore.

I've heard some straight RIDICULOUS music that only has 100 or 200 plays online.  The thing these musicians are missing is marketing knowledge.

2. REACH ONE, TEACH ONE

Give knowledge back by volunteering and helping others.

DO NOT focus on yourself all the time. This concept will get you far in life. The way to get someone else's attention (like a music blogger) is to help them with something they need. THEN you can ask for stuff.

You're almost guaranteed to get a response this way!

3. BE DISCIPLINED IN OTHER AREAS OF LIFE

Being more disciplined is what keeps you focused.

Personally, this has helped me with exercising (3 days a week), music business (full-time for over a year now), and my relationship with God.

You feel better and get more done by creating good habits.

4. DON'T BE A PESSIMIST

I know there are always a few musician out there who want to blame their circumstances for their lack of success in music.

I keep trying to tell people though, if you have a computer, internet, DAW, and keyboard, you HAVE a music career lying in front of you.

And if you have a good mic and a little engineering knowledge you're really set!

5. BE ON TOP OF YOUR FINANCES

Being in debt can keep you from fully investing into all the things you need for an independent music career to happen.

So if this means cutting back on hanging out on weekends, going to bars, or spending more time reading financial blogs instead of Instagram, then DO IT!

6. LIVE A CLEAN LIFE

Whenever there's less clutter around you it helps relieve stress.

The last thing you need when trying to succeed in music is more stress on your plate.

Keep a clean house and maintain as peaceful an environment as possible.

7. GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM LIFE

A good songwriter will tell you that most of their songs come from real life experiences, or even stories they've heard from other people.

Hanging with friends and family and focusing on important things will help with this. Everything in moderation.

8. BE UNCOMFORTABLE (FOR A LITTLE WHILE)

Making it as a musician means YOU'RE going to have to be the 1% that does all the stuff your fellow musicians don't do.

You're going to be reading marketing books, practicing, buying promotion, gigging, touring, and doing allllll the stuff that the hobbyists aren't willing to do.

9. DON'T WAIT TO BE RESCUED

I get people every month asking me to manage them. I don't necessarily think it's wrong to have a manager, but most people aren't even close to being at the stage where they need one.

Don't...act...helpless. All the resources you need to succeed at at your finger tips nowadays. Once you start gaining traction where you actually need a manager, that's when you ask for one.

10. BE AN HONEST CRITIC

If you think your music is the best thing in the world, but you're not getting the response you want from fans, try out a promotion.

After that, if people still aren't feeling it ask yourself if the music is the problem. I know artists are sensitive about their work (I am too), but gauging crowd feedback is essential.

11. DON'T BE AFRAID TO BE ALONE

Having a music business is an entrepreneurship. Sure you have friends and family to come support you at your shows, but they have lives to live as well.

The majority of the effort (especially in the beginning) is going to come from you. That means spending a vast majority of time in independent study.

But in the end, it'll be worth it.

KID TRAVIS (R&B, POP)

With an already buzzing YouTube audience of over 400K+ subscribers, Kid Travis wanted his Instagram profile to start gaining some of that same traction.

While you can get some spill over audience from YouTube, Kid Travis knew that Instagram ad campaigns could boost his presence on IG even further!

He discovered that trying to run Instagram ads yourself vs. having us add our years of experience and expertise to them made a huge difference!

His main goal was to achieve new followers who are seriously interested in his journey as an artist.

Kid Travis already had amazing talent but needed to combine his music genius with some marketing expertise to get the best of both worlds.

We were able to bring out the heart of his music through paid ads by editing & optimizing his existing videos and properly researching and structuring his ad campaigns.

The end results: We were able to consistently and predictably gain followers averaging between $0.25-$0.35 per follower (including a bulk of the promotion being done in high cost English speaking countries such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia, & Canada) resulting in around 4,000 new, engaged followers/month on Instagram.
